DOWNSIDES

 

It’s confusing to know what order to do anything. There are so many options and they don’t follow through, so you’re never sure if you’ve filled in everything. Logging your meals is quite a slow process.

Customise the app the way you want and you could have a lot of fun. Additional paid-for options might be worth investing in to make sure you get the results you want.

 

MY FITNESS PAL

 

WHAT IS IT ?

 

My Fitness Pal is a free food tracker app with a huge food database designed to track calories in and out.

 

BEST BITS

 

The database is the best one around, with millions of foods from stores, restaurants and more on hand. You can connect it to your tracker or fitness app like Runkeeper and Strava so it knows how many calories you have burned (and how much more you are allowed to eat).

DOWNSIDES

 

Sometimes searching for the correct food item can be cumbersome and it can get confusing making sure you’ve connected other apps so you don’t duplicate information.

Use the recipe uploader to add in your favourites from any website. Make sure all your fitness apps and devices are paired with it for a complete picture.

 

DIET ASSISTANT – WEIGHT LOSS

 

WHAT IT IS ?

 

Diet Assistant – Weight Loss has a great choice of pre-designed diet plans based upon your weight-loss goals and food choices. Choose your plan and the app provides daily meal plans for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and snacks. It caters for vegetarians, pescatarians and vegans.

 

BEST BITS

 

Easy to use with organised daily menus. Each plan links to a shopping page and you can customise your own list. Has a cool weight graph so you can watch your weight drop !

 

DOWNSIDES

 

The graphics are very basic. Some advance features require subscription.

Put in your target weight, use the BMI calculator and follow the weight-loss tips. Chat and invite friends to join the plan.

 

FOODPRINT DIET BY NUTRINO

 

WHAT IS IT ?

 

Nutrino is a diet and weight-loss app that gives a personalised plan according to your stats, goals and preferences.

 

BEST BITS

 

It’s easy to input your stats and meal preferences plus any allergies and special dietary needs. You can choose to focus on various goals, such as healthy eating, reducing fat or gaining muscle mass. The app connects to Runkeeper, Jawbone, Fitbit and others.

DOWNSIDES

 

The meal quantities aren’t very clear and only a few meals are logged. While it’s free, you need a subscription to get a diet plan and recipes. You can input exercise, sleep, measurements – even your mood – but there isn’t an overall graph of this.

LOSE IT !

 

WHAT IS IT ?

 

Lose It! is a free weight-loss and fitness app which tracks daily intake of food and exercise.

 

BEST BITS

 

Makes you realise exactly what you’re eating and how many calories in a day. Scanning barcodes of food makes it so easy.

 

DOWNSIDES

 

It doesn’t have a big database if you forget to scan the barcode.

 

GET THE MOST FROM IT

 

Log in to track your food, plus all exercise, daily. Even a short walk allows for a treat.

 

PS: Have you got a plan of action ready to achieve your fitness goals in January 2017 ? Are you accountable to anyone ? Have you got someone in your corner supporting you when things get tough, telling you to keep going even when you feel like giving up ? If you have, I applaud you and I hope you succeed.

If you don’t, how are going going to feel at the end of next year, looking the same as you did this year, or perhaps even worse… How would that affect you, how you feel every day, how you hold yourself and how others perceive you ? You see, you need to have a plan of action…but more importantly you need some accountability to stick to the plan when things get tough !
